How to Know When Your Child May Need Support

Children and Teens – 6 min read

Children and teens do not always say, "I am overwhelmed." Often, their stress shows up in behavior, sleep, school, mood, or the way they pull away.

Look for patterns, not one hard day

Every child has difficult moments. Support may be needed when changes are persistent, intense, or begin interfering with home, school, friendships, or everyday routines.

Signs parents can watch for when a child or teen may be struggling emotionally.

What parents may notice

You may see more irritability, sadness, fear, withdrawal, perfectionism, conflict, changes in appetite or sleep, or complaints that do not have a clear medical cause.

Therapy can support the whole family

Child and adolescent therapy can help young people name feelings, build coping skills, and give parents practical ways to respond with steadiness.

What to keep in mind

If you are in immediate danger or crisis, call 911 or contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the United States.
